Many people will not like this article, in fact a whole industry of start-ups and venture funding will have their business models challenged by it, although at least one heavy-hitter seems to agree with me however, I feel there are some serious misconceptions about the technology of Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) that I would like to present, and at least get an informed dialogue started. In this article, I’ll provide a high-level overview of what this technology is, how it works, and what its limitations are, specifically related to its use within autonomous vehicles (AVs). The opinions expressed in this article are mine, and are based on my experience developing AVs and related technologies over the past decade+ of my career.įirst: LiDAR is NOT RADAR. Other than having “Detection and Ranging” in their acronym, and they both use the detection of self-emitted electromagnetic radiation, they have no other commonalities. I read so many articles or posts where people state something to the effect that LiDAR is a RADAR, or is like RADAR, etc, when in fact they are completely different technologies.
